Accra ahead

As the race heats up to succeed Morocco's Omar Kabbaj as President of the African Development Bank (AC Vol 44 No 3) next year, Ghana's Kingsley Amoako, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, is emerging as a front runner. Africa Confidential understands Amoako already has the political backing of President John Kufuor's government in Accra which welcomes the prospect of yet another Ghanaian running an international organisation alongside Kofi Annan (UN) and Mohammed Chambas (Economic Community of West African States). A former World Bank director, Amoako has raised the profile of the Addis Ababa-based ECA, working closely with Nigeria and South Africa to promote the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NePAD). A Latin American economist, Uruguay's Enrique Iglesias, followed a similar career path moving from heading the UN's Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean to the Presidency of the Inter-American Development Bank.
