Destruction in his wake

The new regime's biggest job is to revive the disastrous economy. Job creation and debt relief head a long list of urgent tasks

It was new President Emmerson Mnangagwa's promise of 'jobs, jobs and jobs' that raised the loudest cheers on 22 November at the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front's (ZANU-PF) headquarters on his return to Harare after a brief exile. Of all the tasks facing his government, this will be one of the most arduous. Everyone accepts the jobs crisis is deepening but the data is disputed: government figures put unemployment at 15% but Zimbabwe's Congress of Trade Unions puts it at over 90%. Even according to government statistics, only about 850,000 of the country's 16 million people have formal-sector jobs and most of those are in the state sector, which faces cutbacks in the promised reforms.
