The 14 October bomb is still causing aftershocks, exposing fault lines in the government's approach and a lack of political purpose
Al Shabaab's atrocity in Mogadishu on 14 October – the number of dead was recently updated to over 450 – is shedding light on some of Somalia's many contradictions. One aspect is the indifference of the wider world: after strong initial interest, the international media moved on and did not come back to the topic with the new casualty figures. On the other hand, a positive note was sounded by the outpouring of sympathy within Somalia, and in Mogadishu alone over US$3 million was donated to help victims, and even Puntland, a place not normally liked by the Hawiye who predominate in the capital, gave generously.
