UN joins G-5 force

The intervention of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and last-minute wording tweaks finally enabled France to overcome United States and British caution and support a UN Security Council resolution on the joint regional military force planned by the G-5 Sahel countries. Proposed by France on 6 June, the resolution passed unanimously on 21 June. Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger will send troops. The priority is fighting jihadists, initially in border regions such as Liptako-Gourma (Burkina/Mali/Niger) and the Wagadou forest (Mali/Mauritania).
