Suspecting a plot to rig the presidential election, the opposition has mobilised huge crowds
'We only have God, the people and the law. We want fair elections,' read one of the posters held by protestors from Angola's main opposition party, the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola, who flooded the streets of Luanda, Huambo, and other provincial capitals on 3 June. By UNITA's count, over 100,000 people took part in the rallies. They fear the ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola will manipulate the election on 23 August. The blatantly pro-MPLA media sought to play down the size of the protests, with close-cropped images and presidential admirers deployed to comment but social media allowed Angolans to see pictures that were closer to the truth.
