Frelimo's quagmire

The people who trapped the country in secret debts are still in charge and likely to remain, but investment is falling

President Filipe Nyusi is weak and not in effective control of either the country or the governing party, the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique. Political instability will be exacerbated this year by the conflict with the opposition Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo). The outlook for the ongoing peace talks is not encouraging, with both sides digging their heels in and, characteristically, unwilling to compromise. Violence between them looks set to continue, with the security situation in several provinces likely to remain dangerous. There are already apparent violations of the temporary ceasefire now in place. Frelimo will continue to try to hide these problems from the rest of the world, blocking aid agencies from visiting afflicted areas while human rights abuses continue out of sight.
