Premier Benkirane is back

The Islamist PJD won the most votes in this month's elections but it faces some hard bargaining to form another coalition

It should have been a dramatic general election on 7 October, pitting the Islamist-led government's record of social conservatism and economic stagnation against a Westernised liberal and managerial alternative. In fact, voters again favoured the country's biggest Islamist party, although with a smaller margin than before. With a population of 40 million-plus, just 43% of Morocco's 15.7 million registered electors turned out. That's 10% fewer than voted in local elections a year ago and reflects the disillusion with mainstream politics.
