The leading company in Sierra Leone, Shandong Iron and Steel, is facing a brave new world. The Chinese company acquired a 75% stake in the Tonkolili Iron Ore mine in April 2015, immediately owning 100% of the beleaguered company's equity of Tonkolili Iron Ore (SL) Ltd., as well as its key infrastructure holding, the African Port and Railway Services (SL) Ltd. Shandong also inherited a lawsuit in which 142 Sierra Leonean villagers had sued in the High Court in London for millions of dollars claiming human rights abuses by AML.
