An awkward defendant helps to uncover a secret commissions system

The investigations into Nigeria's Liquefied Natural Gas project span three continents and are a major test of international resolve to combat corruption. In France, it is the biggest case to be investigated since new laws were introduced in 2000 in line with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's anti-corruption convention and one of France's biggest companies, Technip, is at the centre of the case. In the United States, it tests the much proclaimed political independence of the judiciary as the matters under investigation are linked to Halliburton and refer to a period when Vice-President Dick Cheney was Chairman and Chief Executive of the company.
