A curious coup

Brigadier Julius Maada-Bio’s announcement that he will not postpone elections scheduled for 26 February following his 16 January coup against Captain Valentine Strasser has several caveats. Most important is his reference to the need for a 'conducive atmosphere' for 'political developments'; meaning that it’s difficult to hold elections in the middle of a civil war. Contrary to Maada-Bio's assertion that Strasser wanted to perpetuate himself in power, our Freetown sources indicate that Maada-Bio's faction had for some months been trying to pressurise Strasser to postpone the elections
