Terror on the beach

The nation's first jihadist terrorist attack claimed 22 lives on 13 March as politicians on all sides tried to use it to score points against each other. The initial target for Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb may have been the star-studded, 1,000 euro (US$1,100) per head, annual gala dinner for Children of Africa, a charity run by First Lady Dominique Claudine Folloroux-Ouattara. Celebrities at the dinner in Abidjan the Friday before Sunday's attack included Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (wife of French ex-President Nicloas Sarkozy), French comedian Jamel Debbouze, film star Catherine Deneuve and two of France's wealthiest industrialists with African interests, Martin Bouygues and Vincent Bolloré . President Alassane Dramane Ouattara was also there, as was Parliamentary Speaker Guillaume Soro.
