Fight, don't talk

The government has decided to 'disarm' Resistência Nacional Moçambicana, in what is being seen as a victory for hardliners over President Filipe Nyusi's previous, conciliatory approach. Renamo's demands for more regional autonomy have been the subject of talks, but now the security forces are attacking Renamo bases. Fighting is worst in Sofala and Zambézia provinces, where homes have been burned and civilians killed. Supporters of ex-President Armando Guebuza dominate Frente de Libertação de Moçambique's all-important Political Commission, which has imposed the new line, sources in Maputo say.
