CCM faces close vote

Demands for change resonate widely ahead of the elections but history and organisation favour the incumbents

In the presidential, parliamentary and local elections on 25 October, the governing Chama cha Mapinduzi party faces its toughest political challenge since Independence in 1961. This has been fuelled mainly by the presidential candidacy of Edward Ngoyai Lowassa, a long-time CCM stalwart who quarrelled with the outgoing President Jakaya Kikwete and defected to the opposition Chama cha Maendeleo na Demokrasia (Chadema) three months ago.
