The real thing

Coca-Cola has been given a taste of the 'real thing' in its two-year bid to open a bottling plant near Luanda: it has been asked to hand nearly a third of its venture to a company linked to the ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola and is now considering whether to withdraw. Coca-Cola's South Africa licensee, Amalgamated Beverage Industries, leads the project: it joined two Angolan partners to create Coca-Cola Bottling (Luanda) Ltd. CCBL has produced about 1,000 crates daily since 1992 in a small, run-down plant. The new plant has been long delayed by the Foreign Investment Office and Council of Ministers; appeals to President José Eduardo dos Santos produced no result.
