Votes, damned lies and opinion polls

Maximising the turnout and countering rigging could be the key to making a success of tomorrow’s elections

Anyone following the opinion polls for a guide to the outcome of tomorrow's presidential and parliamentary elections will be disappointed. Yet they have played an important role in shaping opinion by being liberally quoted in election reports. The most authoritative polls now point to a narrow gap between the two main parties – the People's Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress. But major uncertainty enters the equation when questions are added about the ability of each side to get its vote out, to navigate the biometric voter verification system, and to guard against rigging and intimidation.
