Madagascar

At the political coalface

Plans by two Thai companies – PTT Asia Pacific Mining and Italian-Thai Development Company (Italthai) – to develop rich coal deposits at Sakoa have stalled amid political infighting. An advisor to Madagascan Prime Minister Jean Omer Beriziky claims that transitional President Andry Rajoelina has ordered his ally, Mines Minister Randrianfeno Tolotrandry Rajo Daniella, to block the Thai companies’ deal. As is often the case in Madagascar, the row relates to a conflict over payments.
