Fuqing crime and punishment

Several recent court cases – some stretching across two continents – highlight the corruption and criminality that accompany the rapid influx of Chinese investment and workers into Angola. On 18 September, a military tribunal heard the case of 15 soldiers of the Destacamento Central de Protecção e Segurança who filed a petition about poor working conditions at the DCPS and about its mandate to protect Chinese-built projects and private businesses. Meanwhile, just ahead of national elections on 31 August, the Beijing government requested that Luanda extradite 37 indviduals, suspected of preying on the growing Chinese community in Angola.
