The new opposition alliance hits the ANC where it hurts

The African National Congress swept to victory in the local government elections on 5 December, winning 59 per cent of the total vote (AC Vol 41 No 23). The opposition Democratic Alliance scored less than 23 per cent. Yet there were glum faces at the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg, while at the DA's Cape Town offices, the champagne corks were popping. DA supporters claimed the ruling party was on the way down, its rival on the way up. President Thabo Mbeki looked unhappy when, two days after the poll, he visited the Independent Electoral Commission in Pretoria which, everybody agreed, had done a good job.
