Corruption claims and rows tarnish Accra's record

Oil deals, political intrigues and grand corruption conspire to undermine the country's image of economic and political rectitude

For several years, Ghana has been praised internationally as a model of political pluralism and rational economic reform, even if some of its more introspective nationals dispute this accolade. The country's relatively cool response to last year's knife-edge national elections and United States President Barack Obama's visit in June reinforced its status (AC Vol 50 No 17). That happy picture is now threatened by a series of politically charged corruption cases ­ on both sides of Parliament ­ and a messy row with America's Kosmos Energy over plans to sell its stake in Ghana's Jubilee Field for some US$4 billion to the US oil giant ExxonMobil.
