Cyril looks to his heartland

Everything seemed to be going the President’s way in the succession battle but then his deputy rallied his troops

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's prospects of succeeding President Jacob Zuma in 2019 – in steep decline recently – changed for the better last week with his endorsement by the Confederation of South African Trade Unions at its elective conference at Midrand. Most of the unions present, including the powerful public sector ones, threw their weight behind his bid to become President. Cosatu remains a key third of the battered but not yet broken Tripartite Alliance, which also comprises the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).
